Moomin House Cafe

Another cafe review (yayyy)!  This time I wanted to post a short but sweet review of the second happiest place in Tokyo!  (I stated the "second" because Disneyland/Sea is  obviously the first πŸ˜‰).
TOKYO SKYTREE MOOMIN HOUSE CAFE

But first, wtf is a "moomin"???  According to Wikipedia: "The Moomins are the central characters in a series of books and a comic strip by Swedish-speaking Finnish illusrator Tove Jansson.  They are a family of white, round fairy tale characters with large snouts that make them resemble hippopotamuses."  They're also ridiculously adorable and Japan loves them.  You can read more on the official webpage here~

Moomins aren't quite popular in the States so if you don't live in Europe or Japan, I'd be more surprised if you did know about them.  I'm not quite sure how I came to know about these lovable and strange creatures but all I know is that I have become obsessed with them. Their innocent and soft charm of the artwork is 100% my type πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜.

Anyways, on to the review ⏩

Tokyo is home to several character cafes dedicated to mascots of odd cuteness such as Snoopy, Pompompurin, and Hello Kitty, to name a few.  Moomin is only one of the thousands (literally thousands if count the countless regional/city mascots throughout the country) characters that are adored in Japan and often gets lost in the mass wave of character cafes that pop up throughout the city.  I've only been to a handful of character cafes but I think that this one really takes the cake (lol) in terms of food quality, atmosphere, aesthetics, and, most importantly, cost.  The target customers for character cafes are usually girls and young women who need a place to chit-chat and those who enjoy the aesthetics of foods as much as the taste.  A super highlight of character cafes is that they usually have character plushies scattered around so you can enjoy your meal (solo or not) with a quiet but soft friend~  πŸ˜†

The service was polite and friendly as always in Japan (bless the Japanese and their high quality customer service values).  I think the only flaw this time was that we waited for about 10 minutes after we  were seated before receiving a menu... They forgot about us lol but it was quite busy during the time we went (Friday around 18:00) so that is to be expected haha...

The cafe itself is not very spacious but the neatly organized and cutely decorated interior of the place keeps the atmosphere feeling light and cozy as if you're in a friend's home (and that friend is Moomin!)~  Our table specifically was right next to the kitchen window where the waitresses (all female servers for some reason) would put in and pick up the orders.  Since we were right there I think I was able to see everything on the menu.

My friend Joy and I ordered the yanson? and quiche plate and my other friend Yuri ordered the beef stew.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the food a solid 8.  Actually, the inside of my friend's quiche was cold so it was definitely frozen and heated up (we told the server and they were able to reheat the food).  I'm giving it a high score because the food did taste good nonetheless... Character cafes are popular mainly for the atmosphere so I wasn't expecting anything extraordinary in the first place so maybe that's why I was pleasantly surprised.

I especially loved the little details.  Just look at the little Moomin-shaped carrot! πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜

Although we were very satisfied with our savory dinner there was no way we were going to skip out on dessert (they say that girls have a separate stomach for dessert πŸ˜‚).  The three of us shared the variety dessert plate which allowed us to sample 4 types of dessert!  A chocolate cake, a parfait, some type of creamy tart and a berry pudding.  I forgot which one was my favorite but I would definitely rate them each 9/10.  Not too sweet but just sweet enough to satisfy if you are a sweet tooth.

Also!  If you order a latte, you get to choose what character from the Moomin story that you want for the latte art.  Sooo cute.

Whether you're a fan of Moomin (like Yuri and me) or if you're just into cute fictional characters/instagram-worthy foods (like Joy~) then I highly recommend this cafe the next time you find yourself in the Tokyo Skytree area!  Just a few minutes away by subway from prime tourist areas such as Asakusa and Roppongi, the Moomin Cafe is the perfect spot for a photogenic afternoon tea or meal with friends or even just a solo date when you wanna treat yo'self.  Bonus: for Moomin fans, there's a character  shop connected to it, so whether you dine in or not you can browse the little souvenir-filled shop and fulfill all of your Moomin fan desires πŸ˜.
